Gretchen Phillips

Sunday, July 01, 2007

Gretchen Phillips is an Austin, Texas-based songwriter, and a singer with a clear, very expressive voice. She sings of hope in dark times, the thrill of passion, her love for her girlfriend, her cat, and more. As she puts it, her music combines "an uncompromising approach to the inherent politics of pleasure, coupled with a ceaseless desire for fun." Knowing that she's briefly visiting New York, host David Garland has invited Gretchen into the WNYC Studio with a pick-up band--vocalist/violinist Bitch, and Garland himself on piano--to perform, and to talk about her life as a musician, as an out-lesbian role model, and as a citizen.
