Rufus Wainwright

Wednesday, October 07, 2009

Singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright is known for his dramatic streak. A devoted fan of Judy Garland, he recently became an opera composer with the summer premiere of his French-language drama "Prima Donna." In 2007, he got dressed up as Garland for a concert that has been turned into a CD and DVD, "Milwaukee at Last!!!" (shot by legendary documentarian Albert Maysles). He joins us to talk about the many hats he wears -- literally and figuratively.

Love love LOVE Rufus Wainwright! Great compositions and beautiful voice. He should be bigger than he is.

The Pabst Theater is one of the most beautiful places I have seen a performance in. My elementary school used to go there every year for some Shakespeare. I don't know if you realize this, John, but audiences outside of NY love their performers. Not so jaded....

I went to a Roxy Music show at our Chastain Amphitheater 6 or 8 years ago and noticed the early crowd was a bunch of young art kids, an odd demographic for Ferry and co. I had not even looked at the opening performer, and when it turned out to be great - he performed in the sunset for these straggling enthusiastic fans kind of dwarfed by the large venue, I asked a little goth chick, hey who the heck is this guy? Unimpressed by my ignorance, she snipped out "Rufus Wainwright" with the "you idiot" unspoken. Been a fan ever since, his Judy Garland cd played in my wife's car for months after last Christmas.
