From Books to Beats: The Oprah Bump

Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and Jay-Z are the latest pop stars to get the Oprah treatment. Today: how celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and new American Idol judge Ellen DeGeneres are becoming tastemakers in the music world. And later: the racy new novel from songwriter Nick Cave might not make Oprah's book club. But it might make you laugh out loud. The lead Bad Seed joins us to talk about the tragicomedy The Death of Bunny Munro.

Ellen Degeneres

Celebrity Tastemakers

Oprah Winfrey is kicking off her show's fall season with sit-down interviews with pop stars like Jay Z, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. Another talk show host, Ellen DeGeneres, will determine the fate of contestants on the next season of American Idol. Today, a look at how media celebrities outside the music world are shaping tastes of music fans. We're joined by Maura Johnston of the music blog Idolator.com and Robert Thompson, professor of television and popular culture at Syracuse University.

Nick Cave

Nick Cave: Novelist

Australian songwriter Nick Cave is a multimedia provocateur. He’s been an intimidating stage performer with the Birthday Party, a warts-and-all composer of songs about God and sex with The Bad Seeds and Grinderman, and the screenwriter of a grisly Western, The Proposition. Today, Cave joins us to talk about his latest brush fire: the novel The Death of Bunny Munro, inspired by a father-son relationship ... and a crush on two pop stars.
