    Smackdown: Albums vs. Singles

The world's biggest music companies are set to unveil new "digital album" formats with downloadable liner notes and cover art. But trendsetting artists like Radiohead say they only want to release singles and short EPs. In another Soundcheck Smackdown, we debate the future of the album format. Later: Grammy-nominated English singer-songwriter Imogen Heap performs live in our studio.

Is One Song Enough?

The world's four biggest music companies are set to face off with Apple in a war of competing "digital album" formats. But Radiohead's Thom Yorke, leader of one of the most influential bands in rock, says making albums can be "creative hoo-ha." Today: Maura Johnston of music blog Idolator and Ben Greenman of The New Yorker debate which format will unlock the future of music: the single or the album.

Tell us: Which is the format of the future: the single or the album? Is there still room for "long-form music" in the digital age?

Imogen Heap started writing songs at age 13 and a few years later taught herself how to do sampling and production with an Atari. She has since mixed and produced most of her albums herself. She joins us to play live songs from her new record, Ellipse.
