New Jersey vs. Long Island: Where's the Better Music?

A trip to the Jersey Shore goes best with a soundtrack of Springsteen, Sinatra and Bon Jovi. Head for the Hamptons while listening to area natives like Billy Joel, Public Enemy and John Coltrane. In our weekly Soundcheck Smackdown, we ask which offers the best soundtrack. Also: classical violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg joins us to discuss her work.

Both have beaches, sure, but which place has better music?

The Garden state has been the home of Bruce Springsteen, Frank Sinatra, Yo La Tengo and Patti Smith. Long Island is the cradle of Public Enemy, The Ramones, Billy Joel and Pat Benatar. Both the Island and the Garden State have beaches, but which place harbors better musicians? We debate NJ vs. LI in today's Soundcheck Smackdown.

Representing New Jersey is Pseu Braun, a music host at WFMU in Jersey City; and Glenn Gamboa, pop music writer for Newsday, defends The Island.

Weigh in: Long Island or New Jersey?

Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg

Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg

Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg is known as one of the most intense and compelling violinists in classical music, who has spent a quarter-century as a performing soloist. Recently, she added another string to her bow – becoming music director of the New Century Chamber Orchestra, a San Francisco-based ensemble. She joins us to share her first recording with the orchestra, featuring works by Piazzolla, Bartok, Assad and Gershwin.
