When "Keeping It Real" Doesn't Cut It
Pop acts like Lady Gaga and Green Day are donning glitzy costumes and elaborate alter-egos, bringing campy theater to the concert stage. On today's show, a look at the increasingly blurry line between fake and authentic in popular music. Also: Pianist Jenny Lin tackles two of Shostakovich's harrowing 24 Preludes and Fugues live in our studio.
Why Authentic Isn't Always Better
Artifice in pop music has a long history - from Ziggy Stardust and his Spiders from Mars to Lady Gaga. Today, we look at the new wave of theatricality in music and why sometimes fake is what feels most real. Guests are Ann Powers, chief pop music critic at the Los Angeles Times and Yuval Taylor, author of "Faking It: The Quest for Authenticity in Popular Music."

Jenny Lin Live
Pianist Jenny Lin was born in Taiwan, raised in Austria, studied in Geneva and Baltimore and now calls New York City her home. Her musical tastes are similarly wide-ranging, with CDs embracing Russian revolutionaries, insomnia-themed works, and her latest, the blazingly difficult 24 Preludes of Shostakovich. The enterprising pianist joins us to perform live.
