    U2's New "Horizon"

The new U2 album recalls some of the group’s classic recordings. But skeptics are asking how often one band can return to the basics. In another Soundcheck Smackdown, we debate "No Line on the Horizon." Plus: the sultry and eerie songs of singer-songwriter Eleni Mandell, live in our studio.

Smackdown: U2

U2 is celebrating the release of its 12th studio album with five performances on "Late Show With David Letterman," an art installation in Los Angeles, and a world tour this summer. But as rock's premier band revs up its promotional engines, we dare to ask: Is "No Line on the Horizon" any good? Join us as Joe Levy, editor in chief of Blender magazine, and Evan Sawdey, associate interviews editor at PopMatters, debate the new album in another Soundcheck Smackdown.

Tell us: What do you think of "No Line on the Horizon"? How does the "third act" of U2's career compare to its earlier work?

Eleni Mandell

Eleni Mandell

Over six albums, Eleni Mandell has crafted sultry, urban folk songs from reliable raw materials like jazz, Nashville, and the music of Tom Waits. On her latest record, "Artificial Fire," the L.A.-based songwriter set out to explore lost love and her "inner teenager." The result: one of her best albums yet. Mandell joins us to perform live in the studio.
