Motown and Stax Records: A Legacy of Soul

Motown Records is currently celebrating the half-century mark of its existence, following fellow soul hotbed Stax Records’s own anniversary last year. Today, we take on the two catalysts of America’s soul explosion in the 1960’s and their contribution to contemporary culture - which was more influential? Also: Operatic mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato joins us live in the studio to discuss her thriving career and her newest CD release of angry arias.

Soundcheck Smackdown: Motown versus Stax

It’s been 50 years since Berry Gordy secured the now-famous $800 family loan that he would use to create Motown Records, the world's then-largest black-owned corporation that transformed American pop music and race relations. The history of soul music also rests on the shoulders of Memphis-based label Stax Records, which passed its own half-century mark last year. Today, we tee up a Soundcheck Smackdown debate for the ages. Which was the greatest soul label: Motown or Stax? Joining us are Steven Greenberg, CEO of S-Curve Records, and music writer and BET network personality Touré. We take your calls and comments.

If the economy has you upset, consider the fate of Handel heroines. On a new CD, American mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato presents 14 mad scenes – angry arias by temperamental and vindictive heroines. DiDonato joins us to share those with us, and talk about her busy career, which took off after winning the Metropolitan Opera’s Beverly Sills Award.
