Critics Week: The Worst of 2008

Soundcheck has spent all week honoring the best music of 2008 - now, we call out the worst. Chicago Sun-Times music critic Jim DeRogatis dishes on the most unlistenable and overrated albums of the year. Also, Eliot Van Buskirk of Wired.com talks about the big stories in online music. Later: Virtuoso banjo superstar Béla Fleck puts a multicultural twist on holiday music.

The Worst of 2008

2008 saw comeback albums by Britney Spears, Janet Jackson and Brian Wilson. It also saw indie-rock darlings like Vampire Weekend and The Killers attract continued buzz. None of this impressed Chicago Sun-Times pop music critic Jim DeRogatis. Today he shares his least favorite and most overrated albums of the year.

2008: The Year in Online Music

Even as record sales continued to plummet in 2008, the Internet was a hub of innovation for musicians and their fans. Today Eliot Van Buskirk of Wired.com discusses the most important online music stories from 2008.

Béla Fleck

Béla Fleck and the Flecktones

Sick of holiday music? Not if Béla Fleck can help it. On the new CD "Jingle All the Way," the world's premier banjo player freshens up "Jingle Bells" with Tuvan throat singers, bends "Silent Night" around 5/4 time, and lets longtime bassist Victor Wooten solo on Mel Torme's classic "The Christmas Song." Béla Fleck and the Flecktones pause during their five-night run at the Blue Note to get us in the holiday spirit with a live in-studio performance.

Béla Fleck and the Flecktones are playing two shows a night at the Blue Note through Dec. 21. Performances are at 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.
