  • Jewish Music, Old and New

Join us for two very different takes on Jewish music. First: a treasure trove of kitschy album covers featuring well-known and obscure Jewish musicians. And later: Erran Baron Cohen, the brother of the creator of satirical characters Ali G and Borat, explains how he reworked and remixed the familiar songs of Hanukkah.

Crowdsourcing: Tell us what holiday music you're hearing in stores this season. (Anything unusual? Or the same old chestnuts?)

Jewish Revival of Vinyl

It started out as an affinity for kitschy Jewish album covers. It turned into an obsession. Record collectors Roger Bennett and Josh Kun scoured the country to unearth obscure vinyl LPs like “Bagels and Bongos” and “Mazel Tov, Mis Amigos.” They join us to explain what the hundreds of album covers in their book, “And You Shall Know Us By the Trail of Our Vinyl,” can tell us about Jewish Americana.

A Light Take on Hanukkah

Composer and multi-instrumentalist Erran Baron Cohen created music to accompany scenes of satirical insanity in Da Ali G Show, Borat, and the upcoming Bruno. (Erran’s brother Sacha Baron Cohen created the characters.) With the holiday season in sight, Erran joins us to talk about “remixing” Jewish traditions and songs on his new album, “Songs in the Key of Hanukkah.”

Elliott Carter's Century

As composer Elliott Carter celebrates his 100th birthday today, the classical music world is taking notice, with numerous performances of his dramatically complex works. What’s more, Carter remains as prolific as ever. He penned nine new scores last year, according to his publisher, with another seven planned by the end of 2008. Frank J. Oteri, editor of NewMusicBox.org, offers an appreciation.
