Kanye's Concept Album

Thursday, December 04, 2008

The new album from Kanye West has some fans scratching their heads. Other fans are applauding. The often-brash rapper has turned down the volume for a new album marked by the grief and loss in West's personal life. Music writer Oliver Wang joins us to talk about "808s and Heartbreak."

Does Kanye West's new album qualify as a detour album? Leave a comment.

This sound effect is nothing new. It started off in California years ago. It was bad then and it's bad now. It's used to cover up a bad singing voice. Kanye should stick to what he does best, rapping.

Sounds like the daft punk collaberation got to his head. More daft, less punk.

Well, I was never a fan of Kanye.

Does talent or ability matter at all anymore? Are there no more R&B vocalists that can actually sing? I believe this album is a Concept album and I have no problem with that and I don't mind Kanye experimenting. The use of Autotune in this way I hope is a gimmick that will fade away soon though. I think Kanye was exorcising some demons with this project and rapping might not have been the best medium for that so I understand his use of Autotune but it seems like he might just be capitalizing on the gimmick. Cashing in on it before the window closes. Kanye is a talented rapper that thinks as much about himself. He must think he can do anything but he obviously can't sing.
