New York Rock City
Tuesday, December 02, 2008
Critics say the Cleveland-based museum has a skewed view of rock and it shouldn't have inducted Johnny Cash, or hip-hop stars like Grand Master Flash. Others say it gives recognition to talent who deserve it and created a canon for popular music. As the Hall opens its new branch in New York this week, music critic Jim Fusilli joins us to offer his analysis.

We don't need this museum. This is just yet another sign that NYC is losing it's edge. It sounds so boring.
The thing that is upsetting is that this museum reflects a part of NY that no longer exists. Its a part of NY that was killed off by a gentrification of the city. I never thought I would see the day when part of CBGBs was displayed in a museum.
Why would John Coltrane belong in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame!!!? Coltrane I can see in the pantheon of jazz gods, but, rock?
That said, they'll never be able to please all the fans, but I agree with your guest that the focus should be on the music... although, not necessarily "musicianship" - think the Stooges or Ramones or Electric Eels -
Self absorbed waste of space and time.
The toilet at CBGB's?!?!?!
C'mon.
Unless there's a little dirty club in the basement of the Hall of Fame, with $5 cover, and three bands every night, there's no way it can encapsulate rock and roll.
I gave up when Buena Vista Social Club lost out to Ricky Martin during the grammys. No contest like that has anything to do with music.
The thing that is upsetting about this museum is that it represents part of NY history that has been killed off by gentrification. I never thought I would see the day when part of CBGBs would be displayed in a museum.
What's more surprising than a Rock 'n' Roll Hall Of Fame in NYC, is the fact that The Wall Street Journal has a Rock and Pop Critic!!!
***** $26 !!!!!?????? ******
OK - forget it - the whole idea is ridiculous, unless perhaps we use it to finance the MTA
The Hall of Fame is in Cleveland because that's where Alan Freed coined the term "rock and roll."
Also, get your white male heads out of your asses. Rock and roll is not just guitar, bass, drums and vocals. While I don't like Madonna, she's the most important female pop music performer of the past 25 years.
"One thing 'bout music when it's real they get scared
Got us slavin for the welfare
Aint no food, clothes, or healthcare
I'm down for guerilla warfare
All my niggas put your guns in the air if you really don't care
Skunk in the air, make a nigga wanna buck in the air
for my brother locked up in the jump for a year
Shit is real out here don't believe these videos
This fake ass industry gotta pay to get a song on the radio
Really though, DP'z gon' let you know
It's just a game of pimps and hoes
And it's all 'bout who you know
Not who we are, or how we grow
I rap 'bout what I know, what I go through
What I been through, not just for no dough
Even though the rent due, what I'm into aint for no dough
Or just no fame, everything must change, nothin remains the same
Sick of the same ol' thang, it's bigger than "Bling Bling"
If I, feel it I feel it, if I don't, I don't
If it aint really real then I probably won't..." ~ It's bigger than Hip-Hop by Dead Prez
