The Long Road to 'Democracy'
Tuesday, November 25, 2008
Hard-rock kings Guns 'n' Roses began work on a new album shortly after their "Use Your Illusion" project in the early 1990s. Few could have imagined it would take 17 years to complete, cost millions of dollars, and scare off every original band member -- save for singer Axl Rose. Rolling Stone senior writer David Fricke joins us to tell the story behind "Chinese Democracy."

I have been listening to Chinese Democracy with my three year old. He loves it!
john...what do you think about Chinese Democracy?
I'm just listening to this without any need to compare it to other Guns and Roses recordings. I listen to all kinds of music. The tracks you've played so far just sound like good music to me. There is also a lot there that could reward a listener willing to give it repeated listenings without trying to make it into anything in particular.
Just what I suspected - not many Guns and Roses fans are listening to WNYC!
I think the album sounds surprisingly good, although it's definitely a throw back. It sounds similar, but nowhere as great as a Guns and Roses album. This is really an Axl Rose production, not Guns and Roses.
