Music To Soothe the Savage Beast

Growing evidence suggests that classical music may help to calm your family dog. Today, we're joined by the creator of a new CD that prescribes Chopin and Schubert to soothe your pooch. Also: New Orleans trumpeter Irvin Mayfield explains how an iPod saved his new album from succumbing to floods after Hurricane Katrina. And, he performs in our studio. This is a repeat broadcast of Soundcheck.

Pet Sounds

A growing body of evidence suggests that classical music can help calm your family dog. (Heavy metal, not surprisingly, makes them more agitated.) Joining us is Joshua Leeds, the co-creator of a new book and accompanying CD called "Through a Dog’s Ear," which prescribes Chopin and Schubert to soothe your pooch. Also with us is Peter Borchelt, PhD, an animal behaviorist based in New York.

Weigh in: Do you find music effective at calming your pet?

Irvin Mayfield

New Orleans cultural ambassador and trumpeter Irvin Mayfield was about to record an album when Hurricane Katrina struck. The offices of his record company where destroyed by the floods, but thanks to his iPod – where he saved the original mixes – the music wasn't lost. Mayfield joins us to talk about his new album, "Love Songs, Ballads and Standards," about life at the Crescent City after Katrina, and to perform in our studio.
