Placido Domingo

Thursday, August 07, 2008

Tenor Placido Domingo is at home in the world's great opera houses, but also in vast stadiums and on the pop charts. His new album is a collection of coplas, the popular Spanish street songs he heard as a child. He joins us to talk about the record and to name who will be the next Pavarotti.

Placido, I thought Luciano Pavarotti was the greatest living tenor until I heard you sing!

And a few years ago, a dental surgeon offered me various CDs to listen to, mostly pop music. When he finally mentioned a recording of your zarzuelas, I leapt for it. Your wonderful voice carried me through all but the worst pain during a horrendous 40 minutes.

Thank you for that and many hours of blissful, unmarred, listening!

Domingo may well be the most versatile tenor ever. There is really no tenor role that is or was beyond his capability. Moreover, he managed to carry forth the bel canto tradition into Verdi and Wagner roles by maintaining such glorious, lyrical lines. I cannot wait to hear his Boccanegra. If he continues to reach into the baritone rep, I would love to hear him sing Germont in Traviata.
