Ry Cooder

Tuesday, June 24, 2008

Ry Cooder is best-known for his eclectic guitar-driven albums and his collaboration with Cuban musicians in the Buena Vista Social Club project. His latest release, a CD-and-novella combo called I, Flathead, completes his "California Trilogy" of albums. It follows the fictional musician Kash Buk, his alien friend Shakey, and their obsession with racing cars fashioned from military surplus parts and flathead engines. He joins us to explain what it's about.

I so enjoyed this interview! While I have been a fan of Ry for many decades, his growth as an artist always inspires. "Can I smoke in here?" blew me away in it's spare richness. I look forward to enjoying I Flathead. Thanks for continued radio that enriches us all.

Thanks for the great interview with my all-time musical hero Mr. Ry Cooder.

I'flathead is superb! Listen also to Ersi Arvizu "Friend For Live" and Mavis Staples "We'll Never Turn Back". Ry Cooder produced these CD's and plays guitar and mandolin.
