    Lil' Wayne: Best Rapper Alive?

In another Soundcheck Smackdown, we debate whether Lil' Wayne is indeed the best rapper alive -- as he often claims -- or just out of control. Later: Jakob Dylan, leader of The Wallflowers and the son of a songwriting great, talks about his solo debut, "Seeing Things." And, he performs live in our studio.

Soundcheck Smackdown: Lil' Wayne

Lil’ Wayne claims to be the best rapper alive, but it took New Orleans' most famous guest MC two years to put out his new album. In another Soundcheck Smackdown, we debate Lil’ Wayne’s claim to greatness and his new album, "Tha Carter III." Joining us in studio: Sasha Frere-Jones, pop music critic for the New Yorker magazine, and Jake Paine, senior editor of the website Hiphopdx.com.

Jakob Dylan

Jakob Dylan is best known as the leader of the alternative group The Wallflowers -- and as the son of a certain American music legend. On the Rick Rubin-produced solo album Seeing Things, Dylan offers up acoustic folk songs that touch on war, evil and the apocalypse – reminding some of, well, an earlier Dylan. He joins us for a live in-studio performance.

Jakob Dylan and the Gold Mountain Rebels perform tonight at the Blender Theater at Gramercy. Doors at 8 p.m.

In Studio: The Decemberists

The Portland, Ore., band's latest album, "The Hazards of Love," is a concept album with a mythological flair. They joined Soundcheck to play live for a studio audience in WNYC's Greene Space.

Sound Off

Soundcheck

Throughout May, Soundcheck presents “Sound Off” a Friday series on the many aspects of noise in music and our lives. The series -- which coincides with “Better Hearing and Speech Month” -- looks at issues like New York’s noisiest neighborhoods, the latest research on iPods and hearing loss, and what happens when noise becomes a musical ingredient.
