Franco's Win at Eurovision

Friday, May 09, 2008

Eurovision, otherwise known as Europe's "American Idol," is no stranger to political gamesmanship. But a new documentary claims that British singer Sir Cliff Richard was robbed of victory in the 1968 Eurovision Song Contest after Spanish dictator General Francisco Franco fixed the vote. Time Out New York editor Elizabeth Vincentelli takes us inside a 40-year-old controversy.

Oh boy! Having grown up in Sweden during the 60's and 70's, hearing the Cliff Richard song was a real throwback. You should also know (in case you don't) that ABBA's career was launched when they won in Brighton in 1972 with Waterloo.

I finally get the Father Ted episode with "My Lovely Horse". It is so funny, but it 's nice to get the background. I mean, if you know what I am talking about, just hum that first verse. It gets me giggling every time.

"My lovely horse running through the field, Where are you going with your fetlocks blowing in the wind?"...
