The New Breed of Mexican Music

Monday, May 05, 2008

Forget Mariachis - think electronica and emo. As Mexican-Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo, we find out what sounds are booming south of the border and why they've sparked controversy. Our guests are Mexican-based journalist Daniel Hernandez and Alejandro Rosso, half of the Monterrey-based electro-rock duo Plastilina Mosh.

Your guest sounds like he knows next to nothing about the roots of what we now refer to as emo in the US and in Mexico and is drawing distinctions between the US and Mexico (it's not mod-ish and mall-based in the US? really?) that don't exist.

not to mention the fact that today's emo has nothing to do with the kind of emo pioneered by bands like rites of spring in the late 80s/ early 90s.

I would like to hear more on whether the clashes in mexico have anything to do with age, class, gender, homophobia from your guests. I'd also like everyone to stop using the term "emo", at least in reference to music (as opposed to lifestyle, dress etc.).

Good show, looking forward to the rest!

Ok ... so there are some mexican kids that listen to "my chemical romance" so what.. I really am not interested in listening to US music that SOME mexicans like, when the subject is about the new breed of MEXICAN music.

Is the facination with this genre and its followers "all about us"?

With all of the great music that comes out of Mexico you really had to dig to find the garbage that you selected.

Soundcheck can be so "downtown-ny" ... what do you expect?
