I happened to think that the reason that names seem more relevant for the average Jazz band than for iconic, generically named groups (Miles Davis quintet) is that masters can stand on the basis of their names..... if a band leader is not a well-known, influential figure in the current scene, a band based on his or her name is not as thrilling and hence harder to carry a sense of identity or evoke strong lasting feelings, at least as far as the name goes. Miles Davis Quintet is a sweet name cause it was Miles. What's cool about the Paul Harris (or whatever) Quartet? Not nearly as much.
