Irvin Mayfield

Monday, April 07, 2008

New Orleans Cultural Ambassador and trumpeter Irvin Mayfield was about to record an album when Katrina struck. The offices of his record company where destroyed by the floods, but thanks to his iPod – where he saved the original mixes – the music wasn’t lost. Mayfield joins us to talk about his new album, “Love Songs, Ballads and Standards,” about life at the Crescent City after Katrina, and to play live.

The Irvin Mayfield Quintet performs Tues. Apr. 8 and Wed. Apr. 9 at the Blue Note, at 8pm and 10:30pm.

That's absolutely the worst rendition of "Yesterday" that I've ever heard. Sorry Irvin.

What is the name of the trumpet they are talking about?

The trumpet Irvin played and discussed on the air today is called the Elysian Trumpet. You can see a video about the Elysian Trumpet on Youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FG4fpAgCxY

I rather liked that version of Yesterday. Good stuff!
