Tuesday, April 01, 2008

Starting in the 1990s, Stephen Malkmus led Pavement, the band many consider to be the quintessential indie underground act. With his band the Jicks, Malkmus continues to please fans of thinking-man’s rock with his backing band, the Jicks. Their latest album is “Real Emotional Trash.”

There's some bands I like to name-check, and one of them is R.E.M.

I thought this highly enjoyable and totally appropriate to today's show:

Pavement (aka Malkmus) had a song, B-side or unreleased, all about REM. Pretty classic tune.

Unseen power of the picket fence by Pavement

Some bands I like to name check,

And one of them is REM,

Classic songs with a long history

Southern boys just like you and me.

    R - E - M

    Flashback to 1983,

Chronic Town was their first EP

    Later on came Reckoning

Finster's art, and titles to match:

South Central Rain, Don't Go Back To Rockville,

    Harbourcoat, Pretty Persuasion,

You were born to be a camera,

Time After Time was my least favourite song,

Time After Time was my least favourite song.

The singer, he had long hair

And the drummer he knew restrait.

And the bass man he had all the right moves

And the guitar player was no saint.

So lets go way back to the ancient times

When there were no 50 states,

And on a hill there stands Sherman

    Sherman and his mates.

    And they're marching through Georgia,

    we're marching through Georgia,

    we're marching through Georgia

    G-G-G-G-Georgia

    They're marching through Georgia,

    we're marching through Georgia,

    marching through Georgia

    G-G-G-G-Georgia

    and there stands REM

What is this? This sounds like my 15 year old nephew when he sits in his room shaking a tamborine and singing into his laptop microphone.

I have one question for Stephen Malkmus, how did you ever get a record deal?

I busted my chops all my life and never got a deal and I hear your music and I sit here scratching my head.

#4 & #5: wow, you guys really need to listen to some Pavement records. Malkmus is a SUPER GENIUS; that you guys don't get this is your loss.

It's a little late, but nice scoop John. I think you got Malkmus to say that the lyrics of Cold Son reflect his musings on Reality TV and our society. Now if you could only ask him what the other songs are about! I think Wicked Wanda has profound lyrics - at least the meaning I have imbued to them is profound.
