In a Galaxie of His Own
Dean Wareham conquered indie-rock as the lead singer for the bands Galaxie 500 and Luna. Today, he shares his new memoir, Black Postcards: A Rock & Roll Romance that goes behind the New York rock scene, while detailing the collapse of two bands and one marriage. Also: In the 1970's Marc Copland dropped his alto sax and taught himself to play the piano because his attraction to the instrument had become stronger. He performs live and shares his new album, "Voices," with two heavy-weights: bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Paul Motian. Finally: Soundcheck's CD Picks of the Week.
Dean Wareham
Dean Wareham has some of the best bona fides in indie rock: He led cult favorites Galaxie 500 during the 1980s and college-radio staples Luna during the ‘90s. Now working as a duo with his wife, former Luna bassist Britta Phillips, Wareham has documented his life in rock in the new memoir, Black Postcards.
Marc Copland Live
Marc Copland has had two lives as a jazz musician. For many years he was a sax player in Philly and New York, but he eventually dropped the instrument to study piano. He is now one of the most sought-after pianists and composers in jazz. He joins us to play live and to talk about his new album, Voices, with two heavy-weights: Bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Paul Motian.
In remembrance:
Anthony Minghella, the Oscar-winning director of "The English Patient," "The Talented Mr. Ripley" and "Cold Mountain" died today. In 2005, he directed his first opera, an English National Opera production of Madama Butterfly, which came to the Metropolitan Opera last season.
