Rehearsal Space Photo Contest

Friday, February 01, 2008

It's tough enough to find a place to live in New York. Finding a place to rehearse is even harder. We talk with Eugenie C. Cowan of NYC Performing Arts Spaces, a nonprofit organization that recently studied the availability of rehearsal spaces for musicians. And, we announce the winners of our first-ever rehearsal space photo contest, judged by Ryan Duffy, producer of VBS TV’s "Practice Space."

Our categories:

Coolest Rehearsal Space
Awarded to a space with outstanding aesthetic appeal
WINNER: Jennifer Hoopes of Emergency Party (Bushwick, Brooklyn)

Ugliest Rehearsal Space
Awarded to a space that excels in disorganization or just plain dirtiness
WINNER: David Ferraro of Barkuna (Farmingdale, Long Island)

Most Creative Rehearsal Space
Awarded for brilliance and vision in finding a place to rehearse
WINNER: Jay Klein of The Zero Effect (Inwood, Manhattan)

each time i think "Soundcheck" can't get more lame they find a way. what is worse, listening to these people talk about there rehersal spaces or having to listen to the awful music they make.

i guess i will go walk the dog.

In regards to AC's earlier post, you are just jealous they are not talking about. I think the song featured by Barkuna sounded great because it was very soothing. Best of luck to all 3 bands in their future musical endeavors!

I am building a 250,000 sq/ft music facility in jersey city that initially will have 150 rehearsal spaces that can each accomodate 2 bands. the cost is $100 per month per musician (400/ mo/ band). The facility like the other musicgarage facility in williamsburg will be built to recording studio standards. Bands leave their equipment in their rooms and have 24/7 access. The the biggest problem launching a facility like this is getting the word out. Although we contacted Soundcheck we did not get 60 seconds on air. I guess solutions do not play as well as complaining. we can be reached at musicgarage .com

I hoped this would be useful in figuring out how to improve my own music space. But no. Your prize catagories all had to do with superficial appearance, nothing useful such as good ergonomics, amount of equipment within reach from a console or board or workstation, good layout for ease of non-verbal communication while playing, clever ways of packing the most into the least space, how to deal with wiring clutter, most creative repurposing of a space meant for something else, not even whether all the instruments can be gotten to without moving a bunch of other stuff around.

So one of you is upset you didn't get a free plug for your ripoff rehearsal space, and the other is looking for tips on ergonomics?

    Shouldn't you be practicing?
