Sofia Koutsovitis

Thursday, January 17, 2008

Argentinian-born singer Sofia Koutsovitis moved to the U.S. in 2001 and began absorbing Afro-Colombian, Indian and African music traditions. The Buenos Aires native landed first in Boston, then relocated to New York -- a perfect laboratory for her musical explorations. Koutsovitis talks about her debut album, "Ojala," and performs live in our studio.

I just want to say I had the great pleasure of presenting Ms Koutsevitis in 2007 on a series I run, "Women Take The Bandstand @ The Nuyorican Poets Cafe," a series for women bandleaders. I must say she is one of the most innovative and talented women we have come across (and that's saying a lot--we are blessed with so many talented artists in that series) Her skill as a singer, improviser and composer are hard to match, and she is also a very creative "repertorist " (can I say that? Is that a word?) Everyone should RUN out and get her CD, "Ojala." It has become a favorite in our household. !Dale, Sofia!

very nice sound, you should mention that she is not the original artist for this track though. I just feel that is important.

Wow, the song that opened the segment gave me goosebumps!

I'm definitely going to pick up this CD.
