The Ramones (Georges Dubose)Where Downtown Music Lives On
The space formerly home to CBGB will soon house a men's clothing boutique. But the club's memory lives on in a new DVD set that brings to life classic performances from the famed rock club by The Ramones. Today, Tommy Ramone, the punk band's former drummer, talks about the group's music and legacy. Also: Citizens Band, a Downtown cabaret-style collective, deal with a variety of political and social issues, including heath care and the environment. As the group opens their sixth original show in three years, we sample their unique brand of music and commentary. Finally: Soundcheck's CD picks of the week.
The Last Ramone
Tommy Ramone, the last surviving member of the seminal punk band, The Ramones, talks about "It’s Alive 1974-1996," a 2-DVD set of rare concert footage. The drummer/producer was music supervisor for this massive project, with 100 live performances of all your favorite Ramones hits.
Soundcheck's CD Picks of the Week
Four stand-out new albums, as chosen by the Soundcheck staff.
Youssou N'Dour: "Rokku Mi Rokka" (Give and Take) (Nonesuch)
Senegalese singer and songwriter Youssou N’Dour is probably the biggest star in African music today. His latest album mixes the blues, pop and rock with political songs about Africa's place in the world.
-Gisele Regatao
La Révolt: "Les Heures Marchandent" (L-Abe)
The first album by the Montreal-based trio La Révolt is firmly anchored in the tradition of the Québécois folklore. It’s an album reminiscent of the 1970’s Brit-folk-rock bands with just a touch of prog, and featuring great vocal harmonies sung entirely in French.
-Irene Trudel
Kitka & Mariana Sadovska: "The Rusalka Cycle" (Kitka)
A riveting music/theater piece derived from the ancient European tradition of the rusalki, the spirits of women who met untimely or unjust ends and who haunt the woods and fields of Eastern Europe.
Folk song and ritual comes together with original music by Mariana Sadovska in a haunting and evocative vocal work.
-John Schaefer
David Byrne: "The Knee Plays" (Nonesuch)
In spring 1985, David Byrne released "Music For The Knee Plays," a series of musical vignettes designed as 'joints' between longer scenes in a projected theatrical epic by Robert Wilson entitled The CIVIL WarS. It promptly sank without a trace but it's finally out on CD and is worth a reconsideration.-John Schaefer
The Citizens Band
Time Out New York calls The Citizens Band, "equal parts circus, vaudeville and kids-raiding-the-dress-up-trunk." But there's also a serious edge to the group's cabaret-style performances, which have tackled issues from the environment to health care. Today: how the group keeps the spirit of Weimar-era cabaret alive and kicking.
