DJ Rekha

Tuesday, October 23, 2007

Ten years ago, Rekha Malhotra, or DJ Rekha, started presenting live performances that mixed folk music from India, Bollywood and hip hop to create a music style known as Bhangra. It's only now that she is making a record out of it. DJ Rekha joins us today to talk about her debut album, "DJ Rekha Presents Basement Bhangra."

Bhagra is not really what she created - she fused original Bhangra beats (Indian - traditional Punjabi music) with Rap sounds to create a unique New York Bhangra sound - much like what the British have over the other side of the pond with their own Reggae and Bangra fusion.
