Doesn't surprise me that the Sex Pistols claimed that they weren't Punk, as I recall from a documentary on Punk, Henry Rollins explained that none of the bands thought they were Punk, but bands just playing Hard Rock, really fast and really hard! The documentary claimed that an underground magazine coined the term Punk, with it's title of the same name. Any thoughts?
It doesn't surprise me in the least that Rotten maintains this. This is all part of his contrary nature and indeed perhaps this characteristic is itself "punk". He is indeed an awkward and unpredicatable character at the best of times. A really interesting point is whether he really is like this or it is all part of his "punk personality".
It is nonsense in that, of course, they were punk. But at the beginning when they started (in 1976 or thereabouts) no one had really coined the phrase to describe the movement.
