With stage nudity, four-letter words and risqué subject matter, the ‘60s rock musical "Hair" became a theatre sensation and a pop-culture milestone. Today on Soundcheck: "Hair" marks its 40th anniversary with a return to the New York stage. Plus: Gruff Rhys of Welsh rockers Super Furry Animals performs songs from his new solo album, "Candylion."
The controversial musical "Hair" debuted at the Public Theater 40 years ago. Now, it's being revived in a new production in Central Park. We'll speak with one of the musical's creators, James Rado, and with theater historian Elizabeth Wollman about its storied history and its resonance today.
More about Hair
Gruff Rhys is best known as a member of Super Furry Animals, the ultra-fun Welsh pop outfit that pumped out catchy songs and weird videos starting in the 1990s. Rhys joins us to talk about "Candylion," his second solo release and first sung in English. And, he performs live in our studio. (Gruff Rhys appears at Hiro Ballroom in Manhattan tonight and at Union Hall in Brooklyn tomorrow.)
