"Across the Universe" is a new movie musical set in 1960's America and set to no fewer than 33 songs by the Beatles. Today, the film's director Julie Taymor and composer Elliot Goldenthal discuss which songs made the cut, and how they re-imagined them for the movie. Also: Trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard's resume also includes tenure with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and scoring films for Spike Lee. He joins us to perform live music from his new requiem for Hurricane Katrina, "A Tale of God's Will."
Julie Taymor & Elliot Goldenthal
Tony-winning director Julie Taymor and Oscar-winning composer Elliot Goldenthal talk about the challenges of narrowing down the 200-plus songs in the Beatles catalogue for their movie musical, "Across the Universe." The film opens this Friday in New York.
Terence Blanchard
A year ago, Terence Blanchard, the jazz trumpeter, composer and arranger wrote the score for "When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts," the 2006 HBO documentary directed by Spike Lee. Today, Blanchard talks about that experience and performs live from his new CD "A Tale of God's Will (A Requiem for Katrina)."

Soundcheck
Throughout May, Soundcheck presents “Sound Off” a Friday series on the many aspects of noise in music and our lives. The series -- which coincides with “Better Hearing and Speech Month” -- looks at issues like New York’s noisiest neighborhoods, the latest research on iPods and hearing loss, and what happens when noise becomes a musical ingredient.
