Punk and Zen

Tuesday, August 28, 2007

"Long before I was a Zen monk, I was a punk rock bass player." So begins Brad Warner's latest book, Sit Down and Shut Up, a collection of essays on sex, death, God, sin, and more. Warner, a former member of the Akron, Ohio, hardcore band Zero Defects, uses a 13th-century work of Zen literature, Shobogenzo, to explore the punk ethos and Zen philosophy in plain language. We talk with the author about his unusual path to enlightenment.

Let me tell you how happy I am to turn on NPR and hear Minor Threat. I'm always excited for people to talk about hardcore seriously and though I was on the run and couldn't catch everything today, I was thrilled to hear what I heard (AND to hear "Screaming at a Wall"). Punk and Hardcore have a rich philosophy and very interesting socio-religious aspects that I'd love to hear more shows on!
