Fairway To Heaven

Thursday, July 26, 2007

Alice Cooper, the man who invented shock rock, became one of the best celebrity golfers around. He isn't alone in his passion for the sport. Other famous rocker-golfers include Lou Reed, Willie Nelson and even Marilyn Manson. Today, we hear what's behind this passion as we speak with Cooper, and with Jaime Diaz from Golf Digest magazine.

Is there a cosmic connection between music and golf?

I think both golf and music involve a degree of virtuosity and desire for perfection. A good golf shot is probably like perfecting a riff or a chord progression. On a more basic level, the outdoors and solitude is probably a welcome break from crowds, loud instruments, etc.

Golf is just another sport. Many musicians keep their physical health up by doing some sport (basketball, running, swimming, soccer) and we don't seem to make a fuss about that.

Sort of a waste of time this while golf thing. Who cares if Alice Cooper golfs? You spent too much time on this while John Doe was waiting in the wings.

Yes, #3, but if you consider the vast number of musicians who play golf these days, it's a definite trend and one of the more remarkable ones in the music world. Some public radio listeners are so trapped in their own ivory tower world, disconnected from other pursuits.
