Goodbye Critics, Hello Bloggers

Wednesday, June 13, 2007

Arts critics have either been laid off or forced into early retirement at the Chicago Sun-Times, Minneapolis Star Tribune and New York magazine, among other publications. It's left many wondering…why now? Can blogs fill in the gaps? We talk with Frank J. Oteri, composer and editor of NewMusicBox.org; and Drew McManus, an orchestra consultant and editor of the blog “Adaptistration” at Artsjournal.com.

Thanks for the discussion of the waning of classical music criticism and what it means. I still go to the Times and the New Yorker to read reviews; and also to the internet, where I find the more cogent reviews originate in the print media.

One solution might be for WNYC to hire some of these laid off critics and offer them a venue. We would not mind hearing what they have to say over your airwaves.

But then, your panel also discussed the general lack of exposure to classical music in contemporary society. One reason why I go to concerts and care about music is that I grew up listening to classical music on WNYC. Now we just hear talk all day.
