Björk, VoltaHigh Voltage
Critics are singing about Björk’s new album. Today on Soundcheck, find out how her musical collaborators, her native Iceland and, of course, her outfits helped spark a buzz for Volta. Plus, Joshua Redman talks about the role New York plays on his new Back East.
What's Behind Björk?
A certain Icelandic songstress is earning rave reviews for her new Volta and the live shows she's performed in support of it. We talk with New Yorker music critic Sasha Frere Jones about the role musical collaborators and the singer's high-profile played in the new CD. And, we find out from Rolling Stone senior editor David Fricke about bands from her native country that are following in her footsteps.
Head East, Young Redman
Legendary sax player Sonny Rollins went to California to record his seminal 1957 album, Way Out West. Saxophonist and composer Joshua Redman -- a great admirer of Rollins -- did the reverse and came to New York to record his new album Back East. He joins us to talk about it.
Neighborhood Palace
The United Palace Theater might be a new venue for indie rockers, but it's familiar to many Latin music fans. We'll learn more about the history of this concert hall on 175th and Broadway in Washington Heights.
