February is Black History Month. Today: we look at Cross That River, a new song-cycle about African-American cowboys, and the history of black country music. Also: Italian jazz pianist Stefano Bollani plays your requests live. And finally: wardrobe malfunctions or not, we review Sunday's Superbowl appearances by Prince, Billy Joel, and others.
In honor of Black History Month, we look at the oft-overlooked history of African-American cowboys and country singers. We speak with Allan Harris about Cross That River, the song cycle he's written about a Southern slave who yearns for the freedom of the West before becoming a buffalo soldier. And Nashville journalist Robert Oermann takes us through the struggles blacks have faced in country music.
Award-winning jazz pianist Stefano Bollani can play anything from Maple Leaf Rag to The Beach Boys. He'll take your requests and play them live in the studio. Phone in with your favorites.
