    The Star-Mangled Banner?

The National Association for Music Education recently conducted a poll that found that nearly two-thirds of American adults do not know all the words to the national anthem. Today: find out why the anthem is so hard to sing, and what one group of music teachers is doing to re-teach it to Americans. We speak with Dr. John Mahlmann, executive director of the association, which recently kicked off a National Anthem Project. Also: Violinist and composer Mark O'Connor writes classical pieces that draw on the imagery of the American landscape and folk music. Today, he performs live with the Edgeffect Ensemble, a trio that also features pianist Soyeon Lee and cellist Soo Bae. And finally, the Jimi Hendrix of Kyrgyzstan gives us a musical tour through Central Asia.

Sound Off

Throughout May, Soundcheck presents “Sound Off” a Friday series on the many aspects of noise in music and our lives. The series -- which coincides with “Better Hearing and Speech Month” -- looks at issues like New York’s noisiest neighborhoods, the latest research on iPods and hearing loss, and what happens when noise becomes a musical ingredient.
