    To D.I.Y. For

In today's shaky recording industry, when even heavy hitters like the New York Philharmonic no longer have major recording contracts, orchestras have increasingly been financing their own CDs. But when that doesn't happen, composers take matters into their own hands. Augusta Read Thomas acquired rights to make a commercial recording of her music with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and joins us today to share the results. We then turn our attention to another composer with an entrepreneurial spirit, John Luther Adams. Adams makes his home near Fairbanks, Alaska where he writes music based on the landscapes and indigenous cultures of the Great North. A collection of his essays, journal entries, and other writings titled "Winter Music" has just been released and he joins us with a preview.
