World-renowned South African trumpeter and singer Hugh Masekela

    Two Faces of Fame

Hugh Masekela made an extraordinary journey from apartheid South Africa to New York, where he found success with the smooth jazz hit "Grazin' in the Grass" and such anti-apartheid protest songs as "Mandela (Bring Him Back Home).” After his musical success, the trumpeter faced personal turbulence and an eventual return to his transformed homeland. He joins us to talk about how his trumpet has been an instrument of resistance. We’re also joined by the Ahn Trio, a lively and innovative piano trio made up of three sisters which has graced the pages of People magazine’s “Fifty Most Beautiful” issue, and yet is no less serious as a musical force. They’re currently performing in a touring production with the David Parsons Dance Company that comes to the Joyce Theatre this week.
