    Taylor-Made

American Paul Taylor has been called a genius, and icon and "the reigning master of modern dance." A self-described cultural "reporter," Taylor has cast his keen eye over the nation's landscape for over 40 years, and his works reflect the diversity and vitality of the American experience. His 49th season begins tomorrow at City Center, and today, he joins John Schaefer in the Soundcheck studio to talk about the integral role that music plays in making his dance works, and to listen to works by Bach, Ligeti, and Handel, as well as some old-time Southern jazz. Also: American composer Jake Heggie scored a resounding success with audiences if not always with critics for his first opera, "Dead Man Walking." He stops by in advance of his second, "The End of the Affair," based on the novel by Graham Greene.
