    The Flatlanders

A Country Mouse in a City House

New York may not have a single country music radio station, and to some locals, that may not be such a bad thing. But today on Soundcheck, John Schaefer speaks with the Flatlanders, a group of country music superstars who have been performing together for over 30 years and are deserving of New Yorkers' attention. The three Texas singer/songwriters at the heart of the band -- Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely and Butch Hancock -- have produced years of influential solo work unsullied by fad and deeply entrenched in American musical traditions. Also on the show: Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Matty Charles, who performs a brand of old-style country music that has been compared to Steve Earle.
