The So Percussion QuartetWoman Who Runs with the Wolves
French pianist Helene Grimaud has long kept fans and critics guessing with her mercurial playing, her claims of having synaesthesia (the ability to hear in color), and an unusual favorite pastime: raising wolves at a farm just north of New York City. The 34-year-old former child prodigy was recently signed to the elite Deutsche Grammophon label, and joins John Schaefer today to talk about her varied activities. Also, we take a look at all things percussion with members of two of New York's leading ensembles: Jason Treuting of the So Percussion ensemble, and Garah and Greg Landes from the group Syncronicity. Unlike Ms. Grimaud, percussion ensembles don't have centuries of repertoire to draw from, and are faced with the task of continually bringing new works into the concert hall.
