  • Cultural from Coast to Coast

Music and drama critic Terry Teachout joins host John Schaefer today to look at the differences in cultural life between New York and small American cities. The recent announcement that ChevronTexaco would withdraw its 63-year sponsorship of the Saturday afternoon Metropolitan Opera broadcasts led many opera fans to question whether Americans would continue to have easy access to the art form. But with the Internet, satellite radio, and of course, plenty of local arts organizations, maybe things aren't so bad in the "fly-over states." Also on the show: Reconstruction, a new chamber ensemble based both in New York and San Francisco, and which performs music of the Baroque alongside newly commissioned works. The group offers a live performance in advance of its upcoming New York debut.
