The Year 2003 from Southern Soul to Contemporary Composers
Critic's Week on Soundcheck concludes with two writers who are maestros of the essay form: Greg Tate, essayist and columnist for the Village Voice and Alex Ross, music critic for The New Yorker. Tate discusses some of the rising stars in the aboveground and underground world of hip-hop, and black pop and rock, and particularly the emergence of Southern-flavored hip-hop and R&B. Ross looks at some of the contemporary composers who caught his attention in 2003, and how their music reached a wider audience.
