    Rebel Music

At a time when critics accuse the music industry of being apolitical, Soundcheck today features two artists with a strong socially conscious bent. Politically minded soul artist Michael Franti brings his funk band Spearhead in for a live performance, and also to talk about how he has circumvented traditional record labels by delivering his music using the Internet and other non-traditional methods. Also, members of the Chilean band Inti-Illimani stop by for a live performance in the WNYC studios. Formed in the 1960s by engineering students in Chile who ended up in exile in Italy, the 8-piece band is dedicated to exploring indigenous South American cultures, using a gripping blend of winds, strings and percussion.

The Ill Effects of Urban Noise

Soundcheck

Soundcheck received an overwhelming response to our segment on the effects of urban noise. So much so that Arline Bronzaft decided to address the feedback. Listen to the original segment and read Bronzaft's response.
