    The Abaca String Band

    Holidazed and Confused

The Abaca String Band, an eight-string guitar, mandolin, violin, viola, and double bass outfit, normally plays arrangements of a repertoire that ranges from Bach to the Beatles via Mozart and Gershwin. But today they join us for a live performance of their joyous Klezmer-influenced Christmas material. Also, you’ve heard Handel’s Messiah countless times, but why is this oratorio so frequently heard during the holiday season, and what makes it so exceptional? Conductor and composer Robert Kapilow drops by to offer a Messiah primer in advance of his “What Makes it Great?” lecture-demonstration at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola on December 4.

    Your "Democracy Song"

    Soundcheck

As we march toward Election Day, Soundcheck wants you to identify a song that captures the spirit of democracy. Put on your musical thinking cap, get creative, then post your song here.
