Easy Riders
On this edition of Soundcheck we explore two concerts that reveal the ties between music and the visual arts. Sarah Rothenberg, the pianist who is appearing at the Jewish Museum this week to lead a program titled “Schoenberg, Kandinsky, and the Blue Rider,” based on the historic concert in Munich of January 2, 1911 in which the visionary painter Wassily Kandinsky encountered the music of Arnold Schoenberg for the first time. Rothenberg joins us to discuss the fascinating coincidences between the painter and composer. We’re also joined by cellist Maya Beiser, who in an upcoming Zankel Hall program approaches the concert stage like an art installation, juxtaposing text and video sequences created by video artist Irit Batsry. The concert also features several works written for Beiser, including one by Steve Reich, who joins Beiser today on the program.

The Ill Effects of Urban Noise
Soundcheck
Soundcheck received an overwhelming response to our segment on the effects of urban noise. So much so that Arline Bronzaft decided to address the feedback. Listen to the original segment and read Bronzaft's response.
