Crossing Over
Melissa Errico doesn’t fit the usual image of the Broadway diva. While she can belt out a Broadway standard with aplomb, play the Café Carlyle, or appear on a TV sitcom (a recurring role on NBC’s Ed), the Tony Award winning singer also makes a strong impression in the currently fashionable adult pop idiom. Her debut CD, “Blue Like That” (Manhattan Records/EMI) features original material by everyone from Randy Newman, Rickie Lee Jones, and Billy Joel to Rodgers and Hart. In advance of her upcoming date at Joe’s Pub, she talks with host John Schaefer about her wide-ranging career. Similarly, Gal Costa is among the leading voices in Brazil’s Tropicalia movement, though more recently she has been identified with the bossa nova craze. She joins us to offer selections from the venerable canon of songs by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Stan Getz.
