Time Tripping
Geoff Muldaur's latest CD "Private Astronomy," (Deutsche Grammophon) with his Futuristic Ensemble is a new snapshot of music written and arranged by the Jazz Age legend Leon "Bix" Beiderbecke. Beiderbecke was a contemporary of Louis Armstrong but he was also a modernist in the classical tradition, influenced by the works of Debussy, Ravel, and other impressionists. As we hear today, the finest examples of this influence are found in his piano pieces, which Muldaur has arranged for his 18-piece ensemble. We’re also joined today by dance critic Roslyn Sulcas, who weighs in on downtown choreographer Merce Cunningham, whose latest work, “Split Sides,” opens this month at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and features music by the bands Radiohead and Sigur Ros.
