Musical Catharsis

Wednesday, September 17, 2003

Composers often use their craft to express feeling of sadness and remorse, sometimes challenging the audience to find catharsis through the music. Stephen Hartke wrote his Symphony # 3 to commemorate the recent 2nd anniversary of 9/11. The New York Philharmonic, which commissioned this new work, will give its world premiere tomorrow night. Today, Stephen Hartke will join us in the Soundcheck studio to discuss his most recent composition. Plus, John Seabrook, the frequent New Yorker contributor and the author of the book Nobrow: The Culture of Marketing, the Marketing of Culture, for a conversation on the effect of technology on music.
