Enter the Chinese Musical Everyman
To call Wu Tong’s musical life unusual is a serious understatement. He’s in town this week to sing and play at Joe’s Pub with an all-star group of downtown improvisers, then next week he’s playing the traditional Chinese flute called the sheng for the New York Philharmonic’s premiere of a new work by composer Bright Sheng. When he returns to China, Wu Tong will continue with his rock band, Lunhui, considered the "Aerosmith of China." He stops by today to play, and music writer Ken Smith drops in to tell us the many NYC events of late that feature Chinese composers and musicians.
